Why are they called “atomic” clocks?

Contrary to what the name suggests for some people, atomic clocks do not use radioactivity, but instead rely on the precise microwave signal that electrons in atoms emit when they change energy levels.

How can I tell the difference between analog and digital clocks?

The way each clocks displays the time is the key difference. Analog clocks utilize a hands and numbers system, where as digital clocks usually have a digital interface that says in numbers what time it is.

To what does the “grandfather” in grandfather clock refer?

The term “grandfather clock” was coined by H.C. Work in a song he wrote titled “My Grandfather’s Clock.” The song was based on the legendary story of two brothers who worked as hotel managers. According to the story, after one of the brothers died, the clock began to lose time. Repair attempts were made, but unsuccessfully. When the other brother died, the clock broke down altogether.
