Cuckoo Clocks

The cuckoo clock gets its name for the sound the clock makes when it strikes the hours, which sounds like the common cuckoo chirping intermittently with the wire gong.

Other than this defining feature, they are for the most part the same as other stand-up and grandfather clocks, though they vary in size. They are typically pendulum driven, and are also often noted for their design.

The idea of a distinctive chime has developed since the cuckoo clock, and several stand-up clocks today make a variety of different sounds upon striking the hour. But the cuckoo sound remains most commonly used.
