Atomic Clocks

Atomic clocks tell time by utilizing an atomic resonance frequency standard. They are the most accurate time clocks we have, and are used as the primary standards for international time distribution services.

The United States has an atomic clock that regulates the time everywhere else in the country. Similarly, clocks around the world work in conjunction with one another to ensure the accuracy of time. These clocks are also used to control the frequency of television broadcasts and GPS satellite signals.

Atomic clocks used to be much larger, two-piece clocks. The most accurate current clocks are based on absorption spectroscopy of cold atoms in atomic fountains.
